A single performance can sometimes etch an actor’s name in Hollywood’s history. The film industry has created many legends, but some stars could only shine bright for a few hits and couldn’t quite replicate the same level of fame. From well-known child stars to seasoned ones, these actors, who are now over 50 years of age, delivered their blockbusters and left a remarkable legacy with their one shining moment.

Michael Richards

The 74-year-old American actor and former stand-up comedian enjoyed global recognition from 1989 to 1998, thanks to his role as Cosmo Kramer in the hit sitcom Seinfeld. He later tried his hands at different roles but couldn’t match up to the success of his iconic character. Recently, Richards published his memoir titled Entrances and Exits, which delves into his success in the show.

Tippi Hedren

Alfred Hitchcock’s discovery, Tippi Hedren tasted immense success with her two early-career blockbusters, The Birds and the psychological drama Marnie. She even won a Golden Globes Award for the suspense-thriller The Birds. The 94-year-old actress later went on to act in several films and played many cameos, but couldn’t replicate the former success.

Nia Vardalos

The 61-year-old multi-talented Canadian actress and screenwriter wrote and starred in a sleeper hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The movie turned out to be one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time, for which Vardalos won an Academy Award nomination for Original Screenplay. While her subsequent films saw her showcasing her singing and dining talent, along with writing and acting, she didn’t see much commercial success with most of them.

Henry Thomas

The wide-eyed innocent kid who rode a bike to save a fictional outer space being, Henry Thomas, was only 10 when he signed up for the iconic sci-fi film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. The actor won global audience admiration and critical acclaim at the time, as well as a Young Artist Award, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and other series of awards. But the 52-year-old hasn’t been able to woo his audience yet again with his other silver-screen performances.

At 14, Linda Blair sent chills down the spine with her role as Regan McNeil in The Exorcist. The part earned her a Golden Globe for best supporting actress, and also an Academy Award nomination. But the massive fame from the blockbuster slowly fizzled out for Blair, even as she tried her hands at multiple flicks and received lukewarm responses for her roles in her later career.

Jennifer Grey

This actress has a lot to celebrate for – winning a season of Dancing with the Stars (season 11), starring in over 25 films, or playing cameos or roles in several television shows. But the 64-year-old didn’t quite see the resounding success like she did for her career-defining role in Dirty Dancing, for which she received a Golden Globes nomination.

Jason Alexander

The 64-year-old actor has dabbled in many genres like criminal, comedy, fantasy, musical, romance, and even supernatural thrillers. But Jason Alexander couldn’t shake off his ultra-famous image of one of the funniest characters, George Costanza, in the widely popular sitcom Seinfeld. The audiences supported his diverse film choices later but never seemed to take Costanza out of Alexander.

Ralph Macchio

This 62-year-old actor shot to stardom as the beloved Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 flick, The Karate Kid. Following the film’s success, Macchio went on to do a few more hit movies, but the most notable ones still remained the sequels of the said film. He revived the same character later on in a new TV series, Cobra Kai and sent a wave of nostalgia amongst his fans. But throughout his career, he has been remembered mainly as LaRusso.

Mark Hamill

Star Wars and Mark Hamill are inseparable. His iconic portrayal of Jedi knight Luke Skywalker won him both audiences’ hearts and critical accolades. Hamill starred in the original and sequel trilogies of Star Wars, but he couldn’t escape the massive shadow of this famous role. Despite his efforts to branch out, Hamill remained intertwined with the legendary character Skywalker.

Paul Hogan

The iconic 1986 motion picture Crocodile Dundee was a sleeper hit, and also one of the highest-grossing non-American films at the US box office. The franchise saw two sequels, which garnered a mixed response but couldn’t match up to the original’s success. Paul Hogan’s popularity, who played the stereotypical Australian man Mick “Crocodile” Dundee in the films, skyrocketed with the first release but failed to catch up to his initial fame in the coming years.

Billy Zane

The actor played a typical chauvinistic industrialist holding an iron fist over his fiancée in the classic 11-Oscar-winning film Titanic. He found immense praise and attention for his role as Caledon Hockley, to the point where he admits people spouting hysterical lines at him even after several years since the film’s release. But Zane faced challenges later in breaking away from the antagonist’s persona.

Alex Winter

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was a cult hit during the late ’80s, where Alex Winter portrayed Bill’s character, a dim-witted high school student with a knack for time travel misadventures. Unlike his co-star in the iconic duo, Keanu Reeves, Winter couldn’t outgrow the role and found himself behind the camera rather than in front of it as his career progressed.

Jaye Davidson

The English model and fashion stylist, Jaye Davidson, had no prior acting experience when he auditioned for the critically and commercially successful movie The Crying Game. The now-retired actor even received an Academy Award nomination for his iconic role of Dil in the film. Davidson later worked on a couple more projects. But instead of the industry or the audience turning away, he decided acting wasn’t for him and dedicated the latter half of his career mainly to modeling.
