6 Easy Craft Ideas You Can Enjoy Making at Home

Creating something crafty with your own hands can be deeply satisfying for many reasons. It could be the joy of seeing an idea come to life, or the pleasure of spending time in a calming activity. Crafting can be both relaxing and rewarding, especially when you have all the necessary materials at home. You can create beautiful craft pieces and embellishments with basic supplies – think paper, cardboard, fabric scraps, or even stones.

With a little creativity, you can turn these materials into crafts that can be used as decorations, keepsakes, or thoughtful handmade gifts for loved ones.

1) Papier mâché bowls

This versatile craft is among the most fun activities to try at home. Plus, it is also among the most budget-friendly craft ideas, since all it needs is paper (it can be either tissues or newspapers) and glue.

  • You need to start by creating the mâché paste, which involves mixing glue with water. If you don’t have glue, you can even use a flour and water mixture to make the paste.
  • Next, tear the paper into small pieces and mix it with the paste with your hands. This mixture can now be used to create any shape, with a bowl being the simplest one.
  • For the mold, blow up a balloon, and apply the papier mâché paste on one of its halves. Once the paste dries, burst the balloon, and your bowl is ready.
  • If needed, you can paint and make decorative patterns on the shape using Sharpies and glitter.

You can use these bowls to hold lightweight items such as keys or potpourri. Try this activity with your grandkids the next time they visit, and you, along with them, will have some of the most fun moments of your lives.

2) Painted rocks

If you’re looking for simpler DIY crafts to do at home, which can make for perfect decorative pieces, you might love this one. Making painted rocks requires nothing more than a few smooth rocks (preferably fist-sized), some paint, and a bit of imagination. You can find the rocks easily in your garden or pick some up from a nearby park.

  • Wash these rocks properly and dry them well to create a clean painting surface.
  • Get some acrylic paints or paint pens, and start brushing down the designs and patterns in your mind. Even something as simple as flowers or the sun would look lovely, painted on a rock. Or, you can also write your favorite quotes in paint.
  • Let the rocks dry, and then cover them with a varnish to prevent the paint from fading.

These hand-painted stones can brighten a bookshelf, garden corner, windowsill, or can be gifted as paperweights.

3) Bookmarks

Making bookmarks is a quick and enjoyable activity to share with friends and family. Bookmarks are both decorative and useful, and make for great handmade gifts. You’ll need cardboard pieces, scissors, markers, and paints to make them.

  • Start by cutting the cardboard into long rectangular pieces, the classic bookmark shape.
  • If the cardboard does not have a plain white surface, you can stick a plain piece of paper on it before decorating.
  • Take your markers and your paints and let out your creativity. Draw pictures and patterns or write quotes – there are endless possibilities.
  • For a little more pizzazz, you can also take a few small flowers, press them between wax sheets. Let them sit overnight. Once the flowers go flat, laminate them and attach them to your bookmarks for a charming, nature-inspired touch.

4) Photo frames

Making your own picture frames adds more meaning to the photos they display. With cardboard or popsicle sticks, glue, and some decorative elements, you can create frames in any color or style.

  • If you’re working with cardboard, cut it into the desired frame size, ensuring there’s a window for the photo. And if you’re working with popsicle sticks, arrange the sticks into a square or rectangle and glue the ends together to form the frame shape.
  • Once the base is ready, paint it in bright colors or patterns, and add embellishments like buttons, beads, or shells for extra charm.
  • After it dries, attach your favorite photo to the back and secure it with glue or tape. You can even add a ribbon loop or a small stand on the back of the frame to display it on a wall or tabletop.

5) Wind chimes

A paper cup, some strings, and some decorative ornaments like beads and shells are all you need to make a wind chime at home.

  • Start by decorating the cup with paints, markers, stickers – whatever your imagination suggests.
  • Next, punch a tiny hole at the bottom of the cup and thread a piece of string through it. Tie a knot on the inside to secure the cup.
  • Attach your embellishments to the other end of the string, and your wind chime is ready. You can also experiment with multiple strings of varying lengths for a better effect.

6) Tote bags

If you have an extra tea towel with a cute pattern or print lying around, you can turn it into a nice tote bag for yourself. For this DIY project, you’ll need to bring out your sewing skills.

  • Fold the towel in half, with the printed sides facing inwards.
  • Next, fold in the bottom corners so they form a small triangle, then stitch across the base of each triangle. This will help the tote stand up better and hold more items.
  • Once done, sew the sides together, add straps (stitch two strings on the center of the opening, in a U-shape), and flip the bag inside out. Your handmade tote bag is ready to use.
