Andre Agassi is no less than a legend in the tennis world. What’s more legendary is that he was known for his game and the unique style and persona he brought to the court! The sensational mullet hair, denim shorts, and stylish tennis wear made him a crowd favorite. So, if you think fashion got in the way of his forehand or backhand, you’ll be mistaken because he rose to world number one in 1995!
His most iconic fashion statement that remains a pleasant memory is his long and flowing hair. So much so that it became synonymous with the name. Also, his modern and edgy looks on the court caught the attention of numerous fans and gave him a ton of attention. Not only that, his unconventional style became somewhat of a talk outside of the court as well. Some of Agassi’s style staples became bandanas, ripped jeans, and leather jackets, which gave his personality a rock-and-roll inspiration. The 1990s era embraced his style, and many people were inspired by his distinctive look. And what made these eccentric looks click with the crowd? His confidence and charisma. It complemented the style so well that people accepted it with joy and intrigue.
Did you know about Agassi’s famous denim shorts on the court in one of the tournaments? Nike was Agassi’s sponsor at the time, during the 1988 US Open, and the brand wanted to create these shorts for him. Famously known as “jorts” or jeans shorts, these became Agassi’s one of the most iconic outfits on the court. The brand had to make them a little shorter so as not to restrict the athlete’s movement while running on the court and hitting the ball.
Agassi’s fashion was not simply flair and style. In one of his interviews, he confessed that he was constantly rebelling in life, and one of them was the very rigid dress code in tennis. “From a psychological perspective at the time, I was in a constant rebellion in my life. I rebelled against a lot of things, one of them being the dress code in tennis.” He told The Cut. People thought that Agassi was expressing himself with style, but he was just exploring himself and enjoying the journey of this rebellion. In the same interview with The Cut, when asked if he chose fashion as a conduit, he responded, “It was just one way, but it wasn’t the only way. Our sport, when I came into it, was very rigid and confined as it related to how one should be and dress. It seemed like a perfect canvas to disturb the peace.”
